Nearly every subject matter: landscapes, coastal scenes, figures, portraits, abstracts, florals & still life are included in Botzum's paintings. His works are rendered in oils, watercolors, pastels, and other media. He loves to paint on site in the open air (plein air - the French term popularly used today), for it provides a visual learning environment like no other. He also enjoys more studied works in the studio. Many of his works are thought to be moody - and probably so since they seem to reflect his visceral response to people and places he finds in his search for paintable images. Take a look at his paintings and see if you can sense the emotions attached to the images.

Of this he says, “To see beyond the visual and auditory noise of the modern life and to capture the songs that resonate within is the essence of my paintings.”

Recipe for A Fine Arts Meal
  1. Begin with a lust of life.
  2. Add a dash of empathy for the human condition, offset any bitters with a sprinkle of humor.
  3. Then serve with a creative passion.

With a seemingly insatiable appetite for art, I thank God for this daily meal. Hopefully, my paintings reflect these heartfelt ingredients.

Please relax, look and listen -- and enjoy a tour of my virtual studio and gallery.

About the Artist (read more here)

Gerald Botzum lives in Avon, Indiana - about 10 miles west of Indianapolis. His studio is situated above his residence where it overlooks a hillside accented with a meandering crippled creek and a small pond - all wrapped in a secluded blanket of native trees.  A place for quiet reflection and inspiration.

Most of his paintings reflect a moodiness and seem to contain an expression of empathy for those people and places that he encounters during his travels.  If time permits, he prefers to paint on location (plein air) but does reference photos in the studio.

“I interlock my visual memory with the feelings that I had when I came upon the scene.  So, when I refer back to the photo it seems to all come back to me as if I were there.  My mind allows me to create that ‘en plein air’ sense that the photograph leaves out.”

Recent plein air paintings include works done in France, Spain, Italy, the seaboards of the US, and in many of Indiana’s country sides. Paintings of the islands, Ireland, London and a number of other visited spots also can be found.
